At the TP BOD meeting on Wed., Timber Pines received the 2021 Outdoor Pickleball Facility of the Year Award from the American Sports Builders Association. Members of the TPPC were in attendance to cheer and BOD members were present and part of a picture with the reward plaque! The Club is finally reaping the rewards of our long pursuit for our wonderful new courts! See pictures here in the news item.
The MGM Tournament last week was very successful with lots of pickleball, medals, $$$ for charity and fun for all thanks to Coordinator Tom Asbel for a great day! Thanks also to Cathi Ellingson and Barb Rooks and all of their volunteers at sign-up tables, as court mentors, and selling hotdogs. The next tournament will be on Feb. 18-20--stay tuned for details on sign-up and volunteers needed.
Weekly Update
--Sat. Cookout on Jan 22 at 5:30pm.
Pizza from TP Pizza shop is the main dish this week. Don't forget your side dish! At 6pm the 3 TPCA candidates running for the TP Board will speak to PB Club members (5 min each with Q&A following). Members who do not want to attend the cookout that starts at 5:30pm may come at 6pm to hear the candidates.
--BASH Party Ticket Sales
Tickets were sold at the PARC this past Wed. for the BASH party to be held on Mar 11 at the Lodge. Next BASH ticket sales will be at the PARC on Wed. Jan 26 from 12-3pm. Members may buy 2 tickets for members only. Select a seat in the Main Room or on the Lodge Porch when you purchase the tickets. This is a fun event of food, music and dancing with your pickleball colleagues.
Volunteer Committee
As you have seen most recently at the Tournament and Sat. cookouts, many Club members are needed to help with these upcoming play and social events. Club members who are willing to help should email Helen DeGirolamo, Chair of the Volunteer Committee, at tppcvolunteers@gmail.com and please indicate the event you would like to volunteer for. Here are some upcoming events where we will need help:
--Tournament on Feb 18-20. Need sign-in, hotdog sales, court mentors. Note day(s) you can help.
--TPPC Anniversary Celebration on Fri, Feb 25 from 10am (setup), 11am (ribbon cutting opening, pickleball demos and play to 4pm). Details to follow on specific events and volunteers needed. Thanks in advance for volunteering as you help make all events run smoothly.
CPR Classes
Click Open PDF File link at the bottom of the email for a flyer with information on upcoming CPR classes. The flyer is also posted on the TPPC website at CPR-CLASS-FLYER.pdf Reminders. You’ve seen these before, please act!
--Parking. The Cookout this weekend will tax the parking facilities again. Cars park in the parking lot and golf carts on the Wellness Center side of the Pavilion and in the grass area to the north of the Courts. Carpool when possible.
--Den Sign-up Sheets. Many who sign up for events are not removing their names when they can’t play. This is problematic for both players who want to play and can’t sign up for “full” events and coordinators of events who waste their time setting up play court rosters before an event. Be courteous to your colleagues and click the gray box by your name on the Den sign-up sheets if you no longer plan to attend an event you signed up for. This allows other players to sign up AND activates the Waitlist to contact the next person on the list to play. Also, if you have signed up another player, make sure you have told that player you have signed them up so they show up!
----TPPC Membership forms for 2022 (Dues $10/yr - cash or check to TPPC) are available at the PARC and can be placed in the PB box there. Members who have changed their email or have not used one before, please put it on the renewal form.
Coach’s Corner Instruction Tips
Interesting data and commentary in the recent Pickleball Magazine:
Studies have been conducted at sanctioned competitions, and they revealed that between 40-45% of all shots (including serves) in competition were in the category of dinks (or blocks). That implies that although hitting very hard shots, in the author’s opinion, “may look and sound exciting,” control, placement and consistency are more valuable “skills” than trying to overpower opponents. Also, competitions between male and female players would be more equal in dink games where finesse and touch are required. In Timber Pines play, there seems to be a lot of both approaches to the game. Which approach do you find most effective? From: Mel Kohlberg, January 17, 2022
